Giammarco-Vetrocoke, established in 1955 in Venice, Italy, traces its origins back to the visionary merging of two major production facilities: a glasswork and a coking plant, orchestrated by Senator Giovanni Agnelli in 1924. This fusion gave birth to Vetrocoke.

The increased availability of coke oven gas led to the establishment of Vetrocoke Azotati in 1937, focusing on the production of synthetic Ammonia (NH3), an intermediate compound crucial for nitrogen-based fertilizers. This was achieved by harnessing the hydrogen (H2) content in coke oven gas.

In 1939, on the eve of World War II, Giuseppe Giammarco was appointed as the director of Vetrocoke Azotati. In the post-war period, he undertook the daunting task of reconstructing heavily damaged production facilities following seven significant aerial bombardments.

Giuseppe Giammarco, a brilliant and inventive mind, discovered the properties of certain substances known as activators that significantly enhanced the absorption and removal of CO2 from the synthesis gas mixture used in NH3 production. This discovery revolutionized the industry’s technology, leading to the development of highly simplified and reliable CO2 absorption/removal plants. These innovations were initially implemented at the Vetrocoke Azotati plant in Porto Marghera.

In 1955, Giuseppe Giammarco founded Giammarco-Vetrocoke (GV) to further industrialize the patents related to CO2 absorption/removal processes. Since then, the GV processes have been awarded 16 international patents, serving as the foundation for constructing over 400 installations across the globe, with notable prevalence in Europe, India, and Russia.

In 1975, Giammarco-Vetrocoke embarked on a transformative phase by welcoming two eminent figures, Paolo Giammarco and Luigi Tomasi. Their arrival marked a pivotal era, consolidating the company’s standing and propelling its expansion endeavours. Their technical prowess was instrumental in project development, where they pioneered the initial formulation of a comprehensive Process Design Package (PDP) within the company. Their substantial contributions to research and development resulted in the issuance of numerous patents on a global scale.

In 2013, Giammarco-Vetrocoke embarked on a pioneering venture, partnering with Marchi Industriale to establish Green Methane (GM). With GM’s development of an exclusive and established technology, enabling the upgrading of Biogas into Biomethane, this strategic partnership laid the cornerstone for pioneering advancements in the renewable energy sector. Green Methane swiftly emerged as a frontrunner, culminating in its integration into the esteemed Rosetti Marino Group in 2021.

In 2021, the company welcomed the entry of the third generation of the Giammarco family, with Giuseppe Giammarco at the helm. This marked a significant milestone as the company embarked on a journey to extend its technological prowess beyond its existing domains. With a vision to contribute to the post-combustion Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CCUS), implemented in a wider spectrum of industries, such as Biomass gasification, W2E, Cement, Glass, Pulp & Paper or Steel plants, Giammarco-Vetrocoke remains unwaveringly dedicated to fulfilling its pivotal role in the energy transition. This strategic move is a testament to the company’s enduring dedication to its responsibilities, leveraging its core competencies to forge a sustainable path forward.

Even after almost 70 years, the GV process continues to stand as one of the three prominent global methods within the specialized industrial realm of CO2 absorption/removal from gases.
